The village in Lower Val di Sole
Caldes is a village dating back to the 13th century in the Dolomites of Trentino, in the Lower Val di Sole, near the River Noce. The name and its older variants Caldis o Caldesio seem to indicate that in the past there was a hot water spring. Given its cultural significance, Caldes is now one of the Borghi più Belli d’Italia and is also known as the “apple village” because it is rich in apple orchards.
The most important monument is Castel Caldes, the manor built around 1235 that gave life to the town and that can still be visited today. The typical cheese is Casolét from Val di Sole, a soft, raw paste mountain cheese with a sweet, delicate flavour. In contemporary times, Caldes has seen the birth and growth of some talented modern artists, including the sculptors Luciano end Ivan Zanoni together with the painter Paolo Vallorz. Their works have given the village an even more significant role in the artistic and cultural sphere of Trentino.
Must-see events and activities
Today, Caldes is a very active mountain village. One of the most important events takes place in June, when the streets of the town give way to the Arcadia Street Festival, two days dedicated to street art and local products. Towards the end of September, the Alpine Dairy Cheese Auction is organised with the aim of enhancing and preserving the art of cheese-making according to the traditions of the Val di Sole and other valleys in Trentino.
Near the Hotel Lastè, in the old watermill on the River Noce, you will find the MMape – Bee Museum which allows you to learn more about the world of bees, honey and beekeeping.
